questions you may have about therapy

  • Being nervous is a perfectly normal feeling when starting therapy, and many people experience this sensation at the beginning. You may wonder what therapy is going to be like, if it’s going to help, and how exactly you do therapy, anyway. It’s likely, however, that once we meet and you get the lay of the land, your nervousness will begin to decrease, and will continue to decrease over time as you become more comfortable with the process and expereince of therapy.

  • While therapy is confidential, there are some legal and ethical limits to this confidentiality. A therapist is required by law to break confidentiality if you are a threat to yourself or to others, or in specific situations regarding the abuse of children, elders, or dependent adults. This will be covered in our paperwork as well as in our first session, and please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

  • When you will start to feel better is entirely dependent on who you are and why you are seeking therapy. Some issues are closer to the surface and therefore may take less time to resolve. Other concerns may be longstanding, grounded in childhood, or a result of trauma. These situations may be deeply embedded and as such will naturally take more time to address. Sometimes people feel a bit worse when they initially begin to work through deep experiences, and this is normal. This is often followed by feeling markedly better, once integration of the therapeutic work begins.
